The Western Ghats are stunning, but the terrain and weather demand respect. Here are ten tips that keep trekkers safe.
Before you go
- Check the forecast — and a backup plan. Ghats weather flips in minutes. Know the assembly point and your organizer's cancellation policy.
- Tell someone your plan. Share your route and expected return time with someone not on the trek.
- Carry a government ID. Most Ghats treks need forest permits, and permits need ID.
On the trail
- Stay with the group and the guide. Solo shortcuts are how people get lost.
- Hydrate early and often. Carry at least 2 litres; dehydration hits before you feel thirsty.
- Respect stream crossings. Water rises fast in the monsoon — never cross a swollen stream.
- Mind the leeches. In the wet season, wear leech socks and check regularly; they're harmless but persistent.
- Pace for the slowest member. A group moves at the speed of its slowest trekker — plan for it.
Emergencies
- Know the nearest hospital and the ambulance number. On Kadal2Sahyadri, every e-pass lists these, one tap to call.
- Have an assembly point. If the group splits, everyone regroups at a pre-agreed spot.
Every Kadal2Sahyadri e-pass includes emergency contacts, the nearest hospital, an ambulance number, and an assembly point — offline-ready for no-signal trails.
Trek smart. Find a safety-first organizer.
